KARANA: Bridging Balinese Philosophy and American Hardwood

KARANA, a collaboration between the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) and Indonesian designer Hendro Hadinata

At Indonesia Design Week 2025 (12–20 September), visitors experienced the debut of the KARANA Collection, a collaboration between the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) and Indonesian designer Hendro Hadinata. The collection brought the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana — harmony between people, nature, and spirit — into dialogue with the timeless beauty of American red oak and cherry hardwood.

For Hendro Hadinata, known for embedding cultural depth in his work, this project marked a milestone in translating the sculptural spirit of Balinese artistry into contemporary furniture. Each piece blended practicality with storytelling, transforming furniture into a medium of cultural expression.

The three works — Kuta Bench, Sanur Lounge Chair, and Ubud Light — were exhibited at Townhall, Indonesia Design District PIK2, where they drew attention for their strong narrative elements and material excellence. With natural forms, refined details, and durability, the collection showcased how design can connect tradition and modernity.

The KARANA highlighted AHEC’s commitment to demonstrating the versatility of American hardwood in global design while reinforcing Indonesia’s voice on the international stage. More than furniture, it served as a statement on how design can preserve heritage, foster innovation, and create harmony between culture and contemporary living.
